The Mighty Volcano

Mount Vesuvius is a volcano located in Naples or Napoli. Mons Vesuvius, in Italiana, covers an area of approximately  9 kilometers . It is one of the few active volcanoes in Europe and the only one that erupted within the last century. The other 2 active volcanoes in Italia are the Stromboli and Etna. It is considered as the most dangerous volcano on the world, mostly because of the population that lives near it which is around 3 million, even though there have not occurred  any eruptions since 1944.

The most famous eruption of this volcano was in the year 79 AD. This eruption was so huge that destroyed two major cities of ancient Rome, the city of Pompeii and the city of Herculaneum. These two towns were never rebuilt. The discovery of the cities happened accidentally in the 18th century. This enormous eruption also changed the course of the river  Samo. In some historical books, it has been written that many parts of Europe were covered witht the ash ,so thei had something like a black out. In another eruption, in 472 and1631, ash from Napoli there travelled and fell on Constantinople-Istanbul, which is about 1.2 km far away.

The only sources written on a document is from 2 young survivors, The Plinys:

Pliny the younger who wrote what he witnessed to the historian Tacitus. The boy made a comparison between the volcanic eruption and a pine tree.

His uncle, Pliny the elder who went to the scene after the eruption and who found a survivor messenger whose party tried to rescue with his small boat

Unknown is the number of the casualties that Vesuvius caused. Found bodies count uo to 1044.

The National Weather Service has stated that the summer in Naples has got off to set a record for experiencing the all time hottest June.

During the month of June, the average temperatures recorded at the Naples Municipal Airport was 84.6 degrees Fahrenheit which is 3.8 degrees higher than the normal temperature for Naples.

The twelfth day of June was said to be the hottest day in Naples, with the mercury hitting at 97 degrees at the airport. This has overcome the record which was set earlier in the year 1944, that shown off an average temperature of 84.1 degrees.

Inland, 14th and 16th days of the June are considered as the hottest days where some locations have reached 100 degrees in Big Cypress National Preserve and topped out at 98 in Immokalee.

According to the National Weather Service, Fort Lauderdale and Miami have also set records for the hottest June and stated that Naples is not only experiencing the highest temperature in June but also the rainfall level reached to almost 9.7 inches, which is 1.5 inches higher than the normal.

Forecasters have attributed that there was a less cloud cover because of the stronger high pressures over the Southeast and Florida and that resulted in the hot weather.

Naples’ Gastronomical Gift to the world: Pizza

Pizza and pizza like dishes have been eaten for centuries by the Greeks, Egyptian and people in the Mediterranean, so who invented the pizza as we know it today?

The word “Pizza” had appeared in Medieval Latin by the year 997 and a 16th century Galette flatbread in Naples was called a pizza.

The credit for the modern pizza is attributed to baker Raffaele Esposito of Naples. He owned a restaurant called the Pizzeria di Pietro, and in 1889 he baked a dish he called “pizza” for the visit of Italian King Umberto I and Queen Margherita, a pizza garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil, to represent the colors of the Italian flag.

The genuine Neapolitan pizza dough consists of wheat flour, natural Neapolitan yeast or brewer’s yeast, salt and water mostly hand kneaded and formed by hand no more than 3mm thick. Authenticity demands tomatoes and Mozzarella cheese. It should be baked in a stone oven with an oak-wood fire.

The first pizzeria in North America was opened in 1905 by Gennaro Lombardi at 53 1/3 Spring Street in New York City. 1930’s saw the appearance of the first “Pizza Hut” chain of pizza restaurants in the United States

The 20th century has seen the pizza become an international food with widely varying toppings.

Naples is a place full of historical sites but for me writing this article makes me want only one thing from Naples….Pizza.
